Following the Federal
Government's surprise announcement to build its own $43 billion
national broadband network, numbers are being crunched and questions asked
about whether it will be viable. The Opposition says it's not convinced, while
analysts and industry players are divided about what users of the new network
will have to pay to ensure it makes sufficient returns to warrant the big
spend. Australia's third biggest telco, AAPT, comes down firmly on the not
viable side. AAPT pulled out of the bidding process for the network last year
because it couldn't make its bid work economically. AAPT CEO Paul Broad says
the new plan is no different.
